Grape packaging, sorting and storage
Your grapes are on their way or already arriving, while retail planning continues as usual. That means quality, packaging and delivery all need to align seamlessly.
ERP Varekamp handles the packaging, sorting and storage of grapes within one integrated logistics flow. From intake and chilled storage to quality control, customer-specific packaging, labelling and transport.
Grapes are one of ERP’s core packaging specialisms. By combining processing with logistics services, products and information are transferred fewer times between different parties.
Grape packaging for retail
Packaging must do more than simply hold the product together. The chosen solution must fit the grape variety, destination, shelf presentation and retailer requirements.
ERP Varekamp processes grapes in various retail packaging formats. We focus on product protection, presentation, ease of use and the route the grapes take after packaging. Depending on the retail programme, we can use:
- topseal packaging;
- cardboard punnets with banderole;
- trays and punnets;
- customer-specific retail packaging;
- labels and barcodes;
- customer-specific product information.
ERP uses topseal machines for products such as grapes and blueberries. Cardboard punnets with paper banderoles are also used as a packaging solution that reduces plastic usage. The right packaging is determined per product, market and programme. This prevents a standard solution from leading the process when grapes require something different.
Grape sorting and repacking
Not every incoming batch immediately matches the final product specification. That is why grapes can be inspected, sorted and repacked before being sent to retail, foodservice or other customers.
Depending on the agreed specification, we assess:
- visual quality;
- product specification;
- weight;
- packaging;
- labelling;
- destination.
The grapes are then processed into the agreed retail format. By combining grape sorting and packaging within one flow, deviations can be addressed early and it remains clear which batch goes to which destination.
Order picking and transport
After processing, order picking and transport planning align with the agreed delivery schedule. By integrating transport, storage and packaging into one chain plan, all steps remain aligned.
Packaging
Grapes are processed into the agreed packaging format and provided with the correct labels, barcodes and product information.
ERP operates more than 60 production lines across multiple locations and specialises in the packaging and sorting of products including grapes.
Quality control
Before or during processing, grapes are checked according to the agreed specification. If needed, batches are sorted or repacked before entering the packaging line.
Chilled storage
After arrival, grapes can be stored under controlled chilled conditions aligned with product requirements and planning.
Varekamp Coldstores provides chilled storage for fresh products, and grapes have been part of this history since the company was founded. The business started in 1953 with the chilled storage of grapes from the Westland region.
Intake
Grapes are received and registered. Each batch is linked to the agreed customer and product specifications.
Who we process grapes for
Importers
After arrival, grapes need to move efficiently into storage, processing and onward delivery.
We align planning with product specifications, packaging requirements and delivery schedules.
Retail suppliers
Retail requires clear specifications, correct packaging formats and accurate labelling.
We process grapes according to agreed requirements and connect packaging with storage and logistics planning.
Exporters and traders
Different markets may require different weights, packaging, labels and presentation.
We can process grapes per customer or destination and prepare them for further distribution.
Businesses with seasonal peaks
Grape volumes fluctuate throughout the season. Arrivals, volumes and retail promotions can follow each other quickly.
By combining storage, processing and transport planning, we create more control during peak periods.
Grapes and Varekamp: a long history
Grapes are not a new product category for ERP Varekamp. Varekamp Coldstores was founded in 1953 in ’s-Gravenzande for the chilled storage of grapes from the Westland region. What started with storage has grown into a much broader fresh produce logistics service. Today, we combine that logistics heritage with ERP’s packaging expertise and capacity.
This gives customers access to multiple services within one organisation:
- transport;
- customs formalities;
- chilled storage;
- quality control;
- sorting;
- packaging;
- labelling;
- delivery.
